June, 2011:

Sacramento Mystery Author Kills at Borders Books

I’m stalking my friend, Cindy Sample, because while she’s just sent her second mystery novel off to the publisher, she continues to tirelessly promote her current novel, Dying for a Date.

I recently read Dying for a Date, a humorous mystery set in Placerville and El Dorado Hills, and was taken aback when one of the characters (albeit brief) was named Margie Andrews. Can you believe it? I’m in her book!

By the way, don’t call me Margie; I hate that. I will pull the car over to the side of the road and beat you senseless with my jumper cables if you ever call me Margie.

But I’m forgiving Cindy because she didn’t know any better. Plus, she didn’t know me, literally, when she wrote the darn thing. Which can only mean one thing.

Cindy is psychic.

But anyway, this weekend she was signing books at the Borders in Folsom and I stopped by to visit, ostensibly to say hello and keep her company and show her some support as a fellow author.

But the real reason I came was for the free dead body cookies.

When Cindy offered me a free dead body cookie, it took all I had not to drool and run away like a monkey to eat my cookie. So I waited an appropriate amount of time (approximately 12 seconds) before I bid my farewells and didn’t actually start running to my car until I was safely out the door.

For a dead body, it looks an awful lot like Big Foot.

What I want to know is, who sells dead body cookie cutters? Bewitched, Bereaved & Beyond?

(Dying for a Date is available in paperback and Kindle editions)

And while I’m bragging about published authors I know, allow me to also say that I recently read Mertianna Georgia‘s fantasy novel, Syn in the City.

Syn is short for Synemancer and don’t even ask me what that is because it’s too complicated for me to get into here. I can tell you that this story is along the same genre lines as the Sookie Stackhouse series. You know, that whole sexy vampire/werewolf love triangle thing. And it’s action-packed.

Goat Thing of the Day: Quintuplets? Wow!

Hello, and welcome to Goat Thing of the Day, a weekly series that pleases, teases, and sneezes.

Today’s photos come from Carmichael author, speaker and photographer Susan Maxwell Skinner. She caught a goat after having five kids. FIVE! Have you ever heard of such a thing?

Goats in the News

And from the Somebody’s-Mama-Didn’t-Raise-‘Em-Right Department, some idiots in Fallbrook, California, killed a goat by suffocating them with duct tape. The goat was being raised by a girl for her 4-H project who planned to take it to the county fair, until it was stolen. Here’s the news link, if you want to depress yourself: http://www.kcra.com/news/28344663/detail.html

Sorry, that was depressing, wasn’t it. Go back and look at the cute quintuplets to wipe out the evil memory.

Larry Crowne Movie Gift Card Giveaway

What a coincidence! My pet caterpillar, Leopold, and I were just asking ourselves, when are Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts going to be in another movie together, and all of a sudden here comes Larry Crowne, opening in theaters July 1.

Larry Crowne movie, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts,

I don’t want to spoil anything, but Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks meet cute, fall in love, get married, have a baby, and name him Larry Crowne.

Tom Hanks, George Takei, Larry Crowne movie

You’ve probably already figured this out too, so I’m not spoiling anything by telling you that in this scene, Captain Sulu performs his rendition of King Lear as a humming musical comedy while Tom Hanks offers Sulu a tri-corder if he would just stop already.

OK, I’m kidding. I kid. I’m a kidder. You could get a better idea of what this movie is about if you watch this trailer.

Did I mention I’m giving away a $25 movie gift card AND a Larry Crowne movie T-shirt AND a Larry Crowne movie notebook? -woo hoo!

The prizes are courtesy of Universal Pictures, although I’m pretty sure Tom Hanks or Julia Roberts personally recommended me and Nanny Goats in Panties to host this event. And no doubt it’s because of the world-wide popular success of my new book: Sticky Readers: How to Attract a Loyal Blog Audience by Writing More Better. I believe the movie rights to my book will be optioned very soon. I’ve been camped near my phone for days now because I don’t want to miss THAT call.

Call for Submissions: Photos for 2012 Goat Calendar

As you know, the world is going to end (again) in December of 2012, so this is your last chance to get in on the Goat Calendar fun. Yes, it’s that time again. In fact, it’s past that time, and we are taking photo submissions until July 31, 2011.

Remember the calendar for 2011? Some of you have them hanging on your walls right now, as we speak.

Pasqualina, Miss April, from Goat Berries

Yeah,… good times.

So anyway, submit your best goat photo (or 2 or 3) and if selected, you will get a complimentary 2012 goat calendar of your own.

Your photo will have a better chance of getting selected if:

  1. The photo is cute, unusual, or funny.
  2. The photo is holiday or season-related (such as a goat wearing a Christmas wreath or a Halloween costume or playing in the snow)
  3. The photo was taken by you or someone you know with no issues about getting published in a calendar without getting paid for it.
  4. The photo is not blurry and is at least 1000 pixels in width and 800 pixels in height.
  5. The photo is in landscape mode (as opposed to portrait mode, because that’s how the calendar pages are situated.)

If your photo is selected for our one-time use, you will retain all rights to it. We can’t pay you to use the photo (this is a not-for-profit endeavor), but you will receive a complimentary calendar as a thank you.

Please attach a photo (or 2 or 3) to an email and send it to margaret@nannygoatsinpanties.com (or click the Contact tab at the top of this page).

If you know anybody who might be interested in this, please tell them about this call for submissions. Or tell your friends about it via Twitter or Facebook.

P.S. If you know a better or cheaper way to get calendars made than through Zazzle, I’d love to hear it. They charge way too much for a calendar and you have to wait until they knock it down 40% and still pay a ridiculous amount for shipping.

Remember, the deadline for photo submissions is July 31. Of this year.

Goat Thing of the Day: Vintage Goat Cart 1919

Hello, and welcome to Goat Thing of the Day, a weekly series that wheels, deals, and banana peels.

Today’s photo comes from local author, speaker and photographer Susan Maxwell Skinner. It’s a picture of Susan’s mother-in-law with a friend in 1919.

Clearly this goat cart photo in the early 1900s was a “thing” because not only has Susan seen another photo of another friend with the exact goat and cart in Lodi, CA, but a guy once mowed me down at a bar to give me a framed picture of his father with a goat in 1927.

Susan also sent me a nanny goat in panties!

Thank you, Susan!
