30 Days of Photos III (Above My Head)

The theme for Day 3 of this photo challenge is: “Above My Head”.

On Interstate 5, somewhere between Wherethehellami and Arewethereyet, stands a coffee shop called Apricot Tree that houses what may be the largest collection of lunch boxes on this planet (I would say universe, but one never knows, does one?)

I think they boast about 500 of these bologna sandwich and Twinkie transport devices.

You can see today’s other challengers over at Ziva’s Inferno.

Hey, hey, hey! I live between Wherethehellami and Arewethereyet and you didn’t come to visit? I am very insulted! I could have shown you the chicken poop that is Over My Head when I hide under the chicken house to get away from AbbyGoat.

I think you’re mistaking West Wherethehellami with North Wherethehellami. Two totally different places. If I am EVER anywhere near you, I AM coming to see you, chicken poop and all.

        Ew!

    OHMYWORD! Those lunchboxes are TOTALLY-SUPER-COOL!

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

I know! I wish I could have somehow been able to show just how many they have.

      • http://mommamiameaculpa.com meleahrebeccah

Now I want an old-school lunchbox for myself!

        • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

Except now they probably cost more than $1.99.

          • http://mommamiameaculpa.com meleahrebeccah

            True.

I’ve heard that the Twinkie will outlast its wrapper by eons! Nice collection of lunch boxes - I only had a paper bag when I was a kid (walking uphill 2 miles in the snow to go to school…)

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

hee hee! I was actually jealous of people with paper bags which just goes to show, the grass is always greener.

I’ve never owned a lunch box. If I ever find myself between Wherethehellami and Arewethereyet, I will have to stop at the Apricot Tree and steal one.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

They probably wouldn’t even notice. :)

  • Tami Von Zalez

I’m pretty sure I had a Scooby Doo lunchbox at some point in my childhood, where the h**l is it now - obviously, at North Wherethehellami.

For some reason, I’m thinking I had a Partridge Family one. Maybe Peanuts. I don’t remember.

      • MikeWJ

See, I’m not the only person who had a metal lunchbox but can’t remember what was on it. We’re all going senile.

        • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

We’re talking 40 years, man. And no one ever said, “You must remember this image. There will be a test many years henceforth.”

  • MikeWJ

I had a really cook metal lunchbox when I was a kid. I can’t remember what was on it, though. I just remember that I thought it was really cool. I think it was sort of dark greenish and blackish, and might have had some sort of space theme.

I like space, and space-related things. Star Trek, for example, was one of my favorite television shows. To be perfectly honest, as opposed to moderately honest, I deeply wish I had a metal Star Trek lunch box with the images of Capt. Kirk and Spock on the front. But I don’t, and I’m not likely to get one any time soon because funds won’t allow for such frivolities.

    I feel sad.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

When you describe the Spock/Kirk lunch box, that was a real one right? I can totally see it. I bet it was at Apricot Tree!

  • http://thegoodthebadtheworse.blogspot.com Linda Medrano

I have never owned a lunch box. But if the urge to do so strikes me, you have pointed me in the right direction!

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

I wonder if the kids even carry them anymore. There’s too many modern-day fancy pants thermal pocketed cool-pak-lined zipper lunch containers to be carrying around a clanky box probably.

  • http://nonamedufus.blogspot.com/ nonamedufus

Cool. That’s a lot of bologna. I remember having a lunchbox as a kid. I think it was a Davy Crocket one. It went with my coonskin hat.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

I suppose you watched the show too? Suddenly the theme song is in my head.

The king of the wild frontier.

  • Coco

It is fun to see your picture for today which I might not see in real but I can see because of you. I’m interested in what were inside besides love and smile.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

      Blogging is awesome for that!

  • http://wheresthefunnyhere.blogspot.com/ Laughing Mom

That is really cool - I love the collection and the photo. Of course I have weird collections so lunchboxes seem perfectly normal.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

Weird collections? Like, you-should-be-on-a-TV-show weird collections?

  • BrownThumbMama.com

OMG! I have that red Peanuts lunchbox too! Pink puffy hearts for Apricot Tree!

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

It’s worth a stop if you happen to be driving down to LA or something. Not the food, maybe. But the lunch boxes.

  • http://artofbeingconflicted.com Cheryl P.

Every time I see those collections I regret not keeping all my old lunch boxes from the 1950′s…who knew that some of them would become worth more than the couple of buck our parents paid for them.

    Cute picture for the prompt.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

I wonder how much a hoarder (I mean collector) on one of those TV shows would want for them?

  • http://thinkspin.com/ Lauren

hahahhaha! Bologna sandwich and Twinkie transport devices. I think they’re also called garbage cans.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

      Ha! True dat!

  • ladyV

    awesome collection. how cute!

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

      Thanks!

  • http://www.roses2rainbows.com/ Linda R.

I like the second from the right in the front. It reminds me of what my uncle used to carry his lunch in, except for the cartoon characters. I think a thermos fit in the rounded top.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

Most lunchboxes did have thermoses. They even have some of those on display too.

  • http://blissfilledlife.com/ Monique Renae

Wow! 500 of them! I might have to add this place to my list of things to see.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

I wouldn’t recommend necessarily eating there. It’s like a bad Denny’s. But the lunchboxes and gift shop are fun to look at.

  • sharkbytes

    lunchboxes are always fun!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jamie-Baker/1538257279 Jamie Baker

May have to stop there sometime. I live in Wherethehellami.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

You do? Like that actual part of Wherethehellami? What are you, In Ripon or something?

  • http://www.weworkforcheese.com/ Nicky

Ok, the yellow one (2nd from the right) and the white one beside it (1st on the right) are not hung at the same level as the others and the white one is really crooked and I could not look at your picture for more than 2 seconds ’cause it was starting to make me crazy. Crazier. Whatever. If I continued looking at the picture I could very well end up driving for the next however many days straight it takes to get to Whereverthehellthatisville so that I can PROPERLY hang those lunch boxes. You would, of course, have to retake the picture at that point.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

      I love you.

      • http://www.weworkforcheese.com/ mike

You know, when it comes to stuff like this I usually don’t care. But now that Nicky’s mentioned it, I can’t unsee it. Including the orange one on the far wall.

  • http://decksidethoughts.blogspot.com Cheryl

You live in a dandy place. I’d love to spend an hour or two in that shop.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret

I don’t live there, I just drive through it once a year or so.

  • Barb

    snoopy lunchboxes…..! Seriously jealous!

  • http://www.shoot-me-now.com Katherine Murray

Oh WOW… they didn’t happen to have a Bugaloo’s lunch box there, did they!? I love it!

  • http://injaynesworld.blogspot.com/ Jayne

That is totally cool. “Wherethehellami” and “Arewethereyet” BAHAHAHA!
