A Blogger Slumber Party with Wine, Cheese and Foreigners

One of the magical things about meeting fellow bloggers in real life is putting their faces to their names. Another is putting their faces to your faces, because nothing beats an IRL hug (as opposed to an ALL CAPS one surrounded with multiple parenthesis).

And so it was recently that I had the fabulous honor of meeting up with some awesome blog buddies:

bloggers

Jayne of injaynesworld, Nicky of We Work for Cheese, yours truly and Linda of The Good, The Bad, The Worse. Photo by Max.

Nicky flew all the way from Canada to visit Linda and her husband, Alex, in Alameda, Ca. And Jayne and I drove from our respective hometowns to meet them. And thanks to Linda’s and Alex’s gracious hospitality, we had ourselves a slumber party - wheee!

Canada! That’s like, a whole ‘nother country!

And not just regular Canada, like somewhere near the west coast, but Montreal. You know, the one in Quebec. Where they speak French and stuff. So I got to hear Nicky speak French with her little man, Max. Max, who at four years old, took the above picture of the four of us.

Max, who not only speaks French, but also plays chess.

See? Max takes better pictures than I because he doesn’t give people red eyes.

After wine and cheese and steak and slumber, we trekked over the next day to the Park Street Art & Wine Faire, where Max criticized the Pinot Noir selections.

OK, that’s not true, but he did placate his mother who HAD to go on the carnival rides and wanted Max to ride with her so she wouldn’t look silly.

Pictures don’t lie. Nicky is displaying ecstatic joy, while Max is showing, at best, sufficient amusement. Who, I ask you, likes this ride better and probably begged the other person to participate?

Somewhere along the festival route was a women’s clothing store that puts Nordstrom’s male accommodations to shame. Alex, the man of the group, may have had more fun than we did.

The Men’s Department at some women’s clothing store in Alameda, where they provide a couch, serve beer and play ESPN.

Somewhere else along the route, we stopped for lunch at Speisekammer, a German restaurant, where Nicky and I split a bratwurst sandwich and our server sported a jeweled tooth.

Am I that old? Is this a thing now?

She’d had it for five years so far, so if you’re considering tooth bling, and the only thing that’s stopping you is its lasting power, or accidentally swallowing it, have no fear, you heard it here!

Nicky and I stayed up late one night talking into the wee hours and I felt like I really got to know her. But maybe I didn’t. Because the next day, we walked to, from, and all around the Art and Wine Faire. So here’s the thing: they say you don’t understand someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes. But Nicky walked multiple miles that day in what I never could.

I know!

P.S. Nicky and Linda wrote their own posts about this trip, so if you want to hear it from their side, go visit them. Especially if you want to see the naked guy. Here is Nicky’s naked guy, and here is Linda’s naked guy.

How nice that you got to meet your blog friends. And see naked men.
If anyone came to see me I could promise naked; naked me, naked Luke, naked Abby. Well, you might not want to see a naked Abby.
The publicist promises to wear clothes. She does not want to scare anyone blind.

Unfortunately, Pricilla, I did not get to see the naked men. Or fortunately, depending on your perspective, I guess. This is why Nick and Linda have the pics and not I. I wouldn’t mind seeing a naked Pricilla, athough I have no idea what I mean by that, exactly.

Yeah, you and Nicky stayed up, but the old fart (moi) crashed at 10:30! This is a great post. So are Nicky and Linda’s. Mine would have been great, too, had I only written it so you’ll just have to take my word for that. ;) But I came home to pile of gotta-pay-the-bills work.

And yes. IRL hugs are definitely better, my friend.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret (nannygoats)

I can only stay up that late because I am married to a vampire. Yep. IRL hugs are better than Skype hugs, indeed! :)

Sounds like you had a great time. A few of us in the Midwest are about to have our own IRL blogger party. Hope we have as much fun.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret (nannygoats)

      Oh, you will. You MUST!

  • Paula Wooters

So where was your naked guy, Margaret? Love Nicky’s wicked shoes, but I could never wear them. Heels and I have a difficult relationship!

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret (nannygoats)

Ah yes. My naked guy. Well, I didn’t venture into the city like Linda and Nicky did, so they got the goods on the naked guy neighborhood.

Darling Margaret! It was such a pleasure to have you three lovely women and the delightful Max all at one time in my house. Each and every one of you brought something to the party, and in your case, it was also SWAG. Alex and I were so glad to get to see you again. It was a fun couple of days! Come back soon, hear?

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret (nannygoats)

Nothing beats the pleasure of the company of people. And you’re no exception. I look forward to the day I see you again, my dear.

Hey Margaret! My first time here (a nannygoat virgin at 43, good grief!) and I’m terribly jealous. It looks like a grand visit! And as Arnold once said (okay, maybe twice) - I’ll be back. Indigo

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret (nannygoats)

Hey wow, thanks Indigo! I’m honored to have you and doubly honored to be blogrolled! Quote Arnold too much and he’ll be campaigning in YOUR neighborhood for public office.

  • http://www.weworkforcheese.com/ Nicky

Now Margaret, while I know you and Jayne both had to drive quite a distance to get to Linda’s, I would hardly call you two *foreigners*!

What do you mean, that’s not what you meant?

I don’t know what I love most about this post: the fact that you said I don’t come from “regular” Canada, the fact that you’re pretending Max doesn’t really have red eyes, or the fact that you mention Max went on the ride with me so I wouldn’t look silly and then you post a picture of me with my mouth hanging open and my hand doing some kind of weird spastic thing.

    Sigh. I love you. (((HUGS!!!)))
    :-)

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret (nannygoats)

The love goes right back to YOU, sweetie! And I will settle for parenthesied (parenthesized?) hugs until we meet again.

  • Slommler

Gotta love them shoes!! Nothing beats a good high heel!!

I wish I could pull it off like Nicky. They’re such sexy shoes.

  • jennthorson

How fun! And what a wonderful picture of all of you! I wish you weren’t all the way on the West Coast, Margaret, because I would love to meet you, as well.

Love the zombie shoes, but there is NO WAY I would be able to wear those without breaking my neck. The zombies would catch up with me and I would be din-din.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret (nannygoats)

And you KNOW we talked about Quirky Loon when we saw those shoes. And if I am ever in your neck o’ the woods, I will come pounding on your door - you can be sure of that. But I’ve never even been in Pennsylvania. I don’t think. I was in the Pittsburgh airport once a million years ago in between flights. Wait - are you in Pittsburgh? Did spell that right? See what a stupid Californian I am?

1st of all, I am INCREDIBLY jealous. What an amazing group of women!

2nd, I am dying laughing that Nicky went on THAT ride in THOSE shoes. My very favorite shoes, that she wore at my house too!

    Awesome post, Margaret!

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret (nannygoats)

So YOU got to see “THE” shoes too? How fortunate are we? I mean, it was nice to see Nicky and all, but those SHOES…
      ;)

      • http://mommamiameaculpa.com meleahrebeccah

        I know!!!!

  • http://artofbeingconflicted.com Cheryl P.

I just love those pictures. Nicky’s enthusiasm for the ride is so fun to see.

I am amazed that Nicky can walk in those heels all day. Did any of the group have sensible walking shoes?? (while I am sure Nicky considers the heels sensible, I mean regular walking shoes)

That Max is so cute. I would have just had to give him hugs.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret (nannygoats)

I couldn’t stop touching him. I kept touching his head every time he went by. He was a good hugger too. Just random hugs. And here’s a little known secret: Max will kiss you if you give him Hot Wheels. Oh, where was he when I was four?

And I wore sensible shoes the whole time. While Nicky was in Zombies, I was in Crocs.

      • http://artofbeingconflicted.com Cheryl P.

Yes, I think that Hot Wheels is the answer to all things in the world of a 4 year old. My grandson who is 4 can be bought off with Hot Wheels or ice cream cones. Small price to pay for hugs and kisses from a cutie.

You are very wise in the choice of your footwear. I applaud you.

I wish I could have been there…just to keep Alex company in the men’s section of the ladies’ store.

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret (nannygoats)

Ha! And not just Alex, but the beer too, right? Or did that go without saying? :)

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

I’m jealous, but more than that, I’m stunned that anyone would, COULD go walking about in heels like that! Great photos!

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret (nannygoats)

Thanks, Babs. And someday, I really really hope to meet you IRL. If you’re less than a crow’s flight from London, surely I will visit there again someday. Actually, I’m not sure how far a crow’s flight is. How about a short train ride? How about I just ask you how far away from London you are?

      • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Unfortunately, it’s a 3 hour train ride from central London. Wouldn’t it be great though? :) )

  • http://fragrantliar.blogspot.com/ Fragrant Liar

How fun. I’m totally envious you all got together. I would never have walked a mile in Nicky’s shoes. They’re about two inches too high!

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret (nannygoats)

I know! I’ve worn heels recently but they were Aerosoles. Aerosoles! Ack!

  • http://findingourwaynow.com/ Susan Cooper

That looks like it was blast. Like you, I have a few very good friends I have meet online thru blogging. We have talked about a meet and greet. It think I need to get on it, don’t you?

The tooth bling was interesting and not exactly on my bucket list at the moment but you never know… LOL
